All returning band students auditioned for placement during the month of May. Students were assessed on their ability to perform fundamentals (Studies 1-10 or rudiments for percussion) as well as scales using this rubric. The higher the score, the higher the ensemble and chair placement. We do not have chair placements in Beginning Band; therefore, this process was new to our 1st year players.
Please note that the curriculum starts the same in both Intermediate and Advanced Band; however, the advanced band gets further in their reading and performance skills by the end of the year. Students selected for jazz band had the highest scores on their primary instrument. This shows extra effort which is required to play more difficult jazz literature.
Every student progresses at his or her own pace. Please know that every student in the band program is valued. The goal is forward momentum. Mr. Ostrow sat down with every student to discuss placement the last week of school. Parents, if you have any questions, please contact Mr. Ostrow at [email protected].
