All State

6/3/2017

Students that would like to audition for the 7/8th grade or 9/10th grade All State Bands need to read the following information:

1) Practice the All State Scales on the last page of your band method book.
2) Practice sight reading DAILY using www.sightreadingfactory.com . You can create a temporary 30 day account to try it out! After that, it does cost money.
3) Purchase (through Cadence Music 1-800-262-BAND OR Amazon.com) the required etude books. To see the etudes and exact requirements for your instrument, click this link here. Print the page titled Middle School Band 7-8th Grade under "Requirements".
4) Contact someone to take private lessons! This is a HUGE motivator to help prepare you for the audition in September. See the lesson teachers and contact them.
5) Consider going to a band camp or a camp specific to your instrument. Many band camps work on the All State material. See the band camps links under News and sign up!
6) Please note, Mr. Ostrow will meet with the eligible students in the mornings before school for the first few weeks of school. These sessions will be "check-ins" to make sure you are ready! Details will be announced in the first few weeks of school.

Class Lists - Recruitment and Retention

6/3/2017

Click below to view the band rosters for the 2017-18 school year. Parents, if there is a problem with the placement, please e-mail me ASAP at Tim.ostrow@yourcharlotteschools.net.

Please note, below is the process used for placement in the 7th/8th Grade Ensembles:

1) May 17th, students completed retention slips that informed Mr. Ostrow if they intend to take band next year and if they wanted to be in jazz band, percussion ensemble, or even double on another instrument.

2) May 18-19th, students were individually addressed with Mr. Ostrow to verify student intentions and expectations/criteria to be placed in certain ensembles. Students were asked if they were ok not having P.E. if they wanted to be in two music classes.

3) May 22-25th, students were scored on their exam through the performance of scales. Students that were auditioning to play saxophone, to double on another instrument, or to be placed in the advanced band or jazz ensemble performed the most scales. All students received two minutes to perform their scales using this rubric.

4) Students were scored in order of ability and placed in each ensemble based on instrumentation needs. In this way, all parts of the music to be performed would be covered. The class lists are now posted below.

5) In an effort to inform the students of the rosters after their band exams, which were on the last four days this year, the students were asked to check the website and sign up for Remind.
