Percussion Instruments

The percussion section is well known for keeping the beat or tempo as the band or orchestra performs. There are many different instruments included in the percussion section; students who select percussion will be challenged to learn more than any other students. Unlike wind instruments, percussionists do not use air to play the instrument.  Therefore, percussion can be boring due to the fact many concepts, such as air and articulation, do not apply to this instrument.  Students tested for these instruments are challenged on rhythmic concepts, as well as coordination/bodily kin esthetics.

**Students interested in playing percussion must have a positive attitude and be very patient. There may be times when percussion students will count 100 measures of rest (waiting 2 minutes) before hitting a triangle! Also, students DO NOT PLAY THE DRUM SET IN BAND- this is done in jazz band. Students should play one year of percussion in beginning band before trying to play the drum set in jazz band. Students that wish to be percussionists are also required to attend morning band once a week for a percussion class that takes place on Mondays beginning at 7:30am.
