How Much Time Does Band Take Up?
Beginning Band meets 47 minutes, every day, during an elective period. The first year of band, students will have two evening performances with a rehearsal prior to each performance. We also have a Beginning Band "Informance" in November. That's a total of around 7 hours of after school time spread across five events. The second and third year is the same with one additional performance and two or three additional rehearsals. In other words: YES YOU CAN DO SPORTS, DANCE CLASS, BOYSCOUTS/GIRLSCOUTS, UNDERWATER BASKET WEAVING, ETC... However, I do ask that students practice! - just like they would take the time to do Math or English homework, they should also take the time to learn to read music and play their instrument(s).
What is the Procedure for Picking/Renting/Purchasing an Instrument?
If you sign up for band, DON'T BUY OR RENT AN INSTRUMENT! In the first two weeks of school students are introduced to the EIGHT instruments offered in beginning band. In the second week we will have an "Instrument Test Drive" and rental meeting. At this meeting, we will decide what instrument you will play and whether or not you will use a school instrument or rent/purchase from a vendor. For more information about the instrument selection process, click here.
At the Instrument Test Drive in August, the following three steps will take place:
Step 1: You will select your top 3 choices.
Step 2: With a professionals' help, you will “try out” your top 3 choices (and more if necessary).
Step 3: Together, we decide which instrument will work best for you and then work to acquire and instrument.

So, you don’t know what instrument you want to play?
No problem.
Do some research…
1) I suggest that students spend some time researching the instrument that they would like to play. Use any internet search engine and type in the name of the instrument that you are curious about.
